Perspective Summary:
Saugatuck’s 2nd Annual IT Trends Survey,
conducted in October and November 2005, indicates that user
executive IT Management Priorities and Initiatives continue to focus
on short term, definable programs with clear ROI in 2006. Saugatuck
refers to this trend as “tactically strategic” IT investment.
As in past years, longstanding tactical priorities
and initiatives such as security, privacy and cost containment
continue to top the list of IT priorities. Yet, the presence of
business/IT alignment, along with data integration, business
intelligence and real-time information among these priorities
suggests that users are also looking to find ways to unlock the
value of their business data. Further, Saugatuck’s research
suggests that these current investments, which on the face seem to
be unabashedly tactical moves by these users, are also highly
strategic bets on what they believe will be the high-impact
technologies of the future - services-oriented architecture (SOA),
web services, VOIP and open source.
