x86 Virtualization: Treating Symptoms While Awaiting a Cure – Part 1
Document: STR-439
Perspective Summary: Despite broad press and analyst coverage focused on IT virtualization, there is one facet that has not been probed deeply enough. While virtualization’s benefits are real and are typically substantial, they do not directly address the fundamental problems which underlie x86 server infrastructures. In this Strategic Perspective, the first of a two-part series, we articulate the challenges confronting typical x86 infrastructures and how virtualization addresses many of them. The second Strategic Perspective, “x86 Virtualization: Treating Symptoms While Awaiting a Cure – Part 2”, STR-440, 29Feb08, uncovers the underlying illness of x86 infrastructures and articulates how virtualization both hits and misses resolving that issue. |
