Perspective Summary:
In
our first major research report on the evolution and adoption of
open source software in 2007, Saugatuck made a series of statements
and issued several Strategic
Planning Positions (SPPs) regarding growth, change, and the
future of open source software.
One
year on, we find the markets proving most of these as accurate,
while a few have changed dramatically, and some new ones have
emerged. The
pace of evolution and adoption has accelerated beyond expectations
resulting in cascading changes throughout markets, offerings, buying
behaviors, and the nature of open source software itself.
This
Strategic Perspective reviews many
of these original assertions and assumptions, and provides an update
on where things stand today and where they are likely heading across
the planning horizon.
