Although
the Microsoft Office suite has become the de
facto work environment for most knowledge workers, cloud-based
document creation and management solutions by Google and Zoho now
offer a viable alternative at a much lower price point that provides
superior support for knowledge workers in a collaboration context.

there are clear functional advantages on the desktop in terms of
creating and managing well-made or polished documents. In this Strategic Perspective, we discuss the impact of the cloud on
creating and managing office documents by contrasting desktop and
cloud-based document creation, functionality, availability, sharing,
timing and value.
