International standardization for wires and magnetic components

Updated: Feb 24, 2021

A large number of mechanisms and technologies are used in the modern world. Introducing more global systems into the technical support of an organization, one should not forget that the clarity and structure of the process being carried out fully depends on how well certain parts of the overall system function. Thus, it can be said that the regulation and tracking of the use of each part is an important aspect in production processes. Today we will talk about the international regulation of the use of wires and magnetic components.

Wires are an integral part of large systems. Since it is impossible to imagine the modern world without electrical supply of devices, it should be noted that even the regulation of electricity conductors is carried out at the international level to create a single system and structure.

IEC 60317–0–2:2020 is available as IEC 60317–0–2:2020 RLV which contains the International Standard and its Redline version, showing all changes of the technical content compared to the previous edition.IEC 60317–0–2:2020 specifies the general requirements of enamelled rectangular copper winding wires. The range of nominal conductor dimensions is given in 4.1 and the relevant specification sheet. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2013. This edition constitutes a technical revision.

If you are interested in a more detailed acquaintance with the standard, we recommend that you follow the link to the site, where you can find all the technical characteristics of the document.

Since there can be many varieties of one part, then the number of regulatory legal acts regulating their use will be appropriate. Continuing the topic of using wires, we recommend paying attention to IEC 60317–0–4: 2020.

This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2015. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: — addition of dimensional requirements for grade 1 enamelled wire in Table 4; — addition of dielectric breakdown requirements for grade 1 enamelled wire in Table 7. — addition of requirement for the adherence test in 8.2.1 and 8.2.2.

Since different parts of the same standard may be similar in sense and interpretation, we recommend that you seek the help of professionals for a more detailed selection of the document you need.

In addition to more detailed control, it should be noted the importance of having documents on the general requirements for the use of certain parts in the production process or business activities. One of the standards governing general requirements is IEC 60317–0–6: 2020.

It is available as IEC 60317–0–6:2020 RLV which contains the International Standard and its Redline version, showing all changes of the technical content compared to the previous edition.IEC 60317–0–6:2020 specifies the general requirements of glass-fibre wound resin or varnish impregnated, bare or enamelled, round copper winding wires. The range of nominal conductor diameters is given in the relevant specification sheet. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2001 and Amendment 1:2006. This edition constitutes a technical revision.

Detailed specifications, which you can find on our website, will provide a clearer picture of how this document can be applied to your organization.

The division of standards into general characteristics and detailed regulation makes it possible to build a well-established system that will comply with all international norms and market rules. One such document is IEC 63093–1: 2020.

This standard specifies the dimensions and allowable limits of surface irregularities of ferrite cores. It is intended that this document excludes ferrite cores which are specialty cores with limited use. Also, special cores which are only marginal variations upon standard cores are excluded. IEC publishes electrical standards for families of ferrite cores, as well as this series of dimensional standards for families of ferrite cores. Modifications to the ferrite cores listed in one type of standard are reflected in the other type.

If the characteristics of this document are only partially suitable for you, you can contact our team, which will help you with the selection of a document that is suitable for your company.

Sometimes individual parts of documents govern different stages and different characteristics of parts and technologies. One example is IEC 63093–9: 2020.

This standard specifies the shapes and dimensions of ferrite cores for inductive components (transformers and chokes), whose the coil is typically made of multi-layer boards (or the coil is part of the motherboard), and the effective parameter values used in calculations. This document gives guidelines on allowable limits of surface irregularities applicable to planar-cores as well. This document is considered as a sectional specification useful in the negotiation between ferrite core suppliers and users about surface irregularities.

In order to more clearly understand which part of the standard is most suitable for you, read the detailed characteristics of the document and harmonize it with the requirements of your field of activity.

Magnetic elements and parts are the simplest mechanism subject to the laws of nature. But this is only separate. If we talk about their application in production, then it should be noted that this mechanism is becoming more difficult and complex and that is why they are regulated by international standards, one of which will be discussed further.

IEC 63182–1:202 (E) specifies the dimensions of magnetic powder cores. This document also gives guidelines on the allowable limits of surface irregularities of magnetic powder cores.

If you use the above technologies in your production or come into contact with them due to the activities carried out, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with this standard in order to understand the requirements of international markets and take a leading position in the implementation of activities on them.

Despite the fact that the test methods were originally created to further minimize risks, even they are regulated by international standards. Since the test methods are one of the first and fundamental stages in the use of technologies for their further launch, a lot of attention is paid to their international standardization and the creation of regulatory legal acts. One of the documents governing test methods in the use of magnetic devices is IEC 61631: 2020.

This standard is available as IEC 61631:2020 RLV which contains the International Standard and its Redline version, showing all changes of the technical content compared to the previous edition.IEC 61631:2020 specifies a test method for the mechanical strength of cores made of magnetic oxides. This test method is suitable for most of the E-cores, ETD-cores, I-cores and ring-cores but other core types such as U-cores could be tested according to a derived method agreed by the parties concerned. This document is also applicable to the mechanical strength measurement of magnetic powder cores.

Since the test methods are quite narrow-profile and specialized in each production, we recommend that you clarify the technical characteristics in more detail before purchasing the standard.

International standards are the key to security and stable international development

A large number of variations and technologies are used in production. Since the world is globalizing, international standards are being created to build a unified system and minimize possible run-ups in technological development between market players. If your field of activity comes into contact with the above technologies, we recommend that you stay up to date with the latest updates in the world of international standardization. This way, you can be sure that your business is in the market rules that meet today’s requirements.
