International standardization of interconnecting devices

Updated: Jul 12, 2021

Despite the fact that in a post-industrial society, the development of technologies implies their complete automation and independence not only from human labor, but also from other technologies, today a completely independent system is impossible without interaction with certain elements. In order to build a single functioning mechanism that will bring high-quality results at minimal cost, various types of technology, both mechanical and electrical, are used, which, in symbiosis, give some of the best results. This system is used in interconnecting devices, each of which has certain technological parameters. If your field of activity is related to large technological systems, we strongly recommend that you pay attention to the following international standards.

Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components - Basic test and measurement procedures - Part 2-10: Tests - Crush and load resistance

IEC 61300-2-10:2021

Test methods are one of the main steps in creating a well-functioning system and setting up production, as well as any other operational activity. That is why the recommendations for the implementation of this stage largely affect the final result for interconnecting devices. A similar regulatory document defining norms and rules is the standard EN IEC 61300-2-10: 2021.

IEC 61300-2-10:2021 is available as IEC 61300-2-10:2021 RLV which contains the International Standard and its Redline version, showing all changes of the technical content compared to the previous edition. IEC 61300-2-10:2021 evaluates the effect of loads which is possible to occur when fibre optic devices are exposed to critical situations such as being stepped on, being run over by vehicle tyres, when an evenly-distributed static load is applied to the top surface of a street cabinet or when a load is applied to a street cabinet's open door. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2012. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:

  • addition of testing an evenly distributed static load applied on the top surface of a street cabinet;

  • addition of testing a static load applied to a street cabinet door;

  • addition of descriptions to perform the test at a specified temperature other as specified in the standard atmospheric conditions and addition of test temperature(s) in Table 1;

  • update of the severities according to IEC 61753-1:2018.

This standard is one of the most relevant today, and if you used the previous version of it, we strongly recommend that you update it and get an extended version of the recommendations in order to occupy a leading position in the market in your area of activity.

Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components - Basic test and measurement procedures - Part 2-14: Tests - High optical power

IEC 61300-2-14:2021

At first glance, the availability of international standards for the regulation of measurements and test methods may seem overwhelming. Nevertheless, it should be noted that the very first stage of testing equipment (different types of equipment) determines its productivity and effectiveness in the future. That is why it is so important to have in place international standards that govern the first stages of verification, one of which is EN IEC 61300-2-14: 2021.

IEC 61300-2-14:2021 is available as IEC 61300-2-14:2021 RLV which contains the International Standard and its Redline version, showing all changes of the technical content compared to the previous edition.

IEC 61300-2-14:2021 describes a procedure for determining the suitability of a fibre optic interconnecting device or a passive component to withstand exposure to the optical power which occurs during its operation. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2012. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:

  • harmonizing IEC 61300-1:2016 and IEC 61300-3-4:2012;

  • addition of abbreviated terms;

  • addition of Clause A.2 regarding input optical power from both ends.

This international standard levels out certain recommendations that were indicated in its previous version, which is why it is very important to pay attention to constant updates of such standards and to update the base of your enterprise accordingly.

Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components - Basic test and measurement procedures - Part 2-56: Tests - Wind resistance of mounted housing

IEC 61300-2-56:2020

Test methods are produced not only for different types of equipment, but are also tested for various existing threats, such as heat resistance, frost resistance, resistance to hurricanes and winds. One of the next important standards in this category is EN IEC 61300-2-56: 2020.

IEC 61300-2-56:2020 describes the test procedure to test the wind resistance of a protective housing and its mounting hardware using the fastening parts recommended by the manufacturer. The protective housing is considered to have a cuboid shape. The applied force in this test procedure simulates a steady wind load from each direction to a protective housing and its mounting hardware fixed to a support.

This international standard is specific and narrow-profile, which is why it should be applied only in those areas of activity where the applied technologies mentioned in the descriptions to the standard are the area of the main activity.

Hydraulic fluid power -- Test methods for hoses and hose assemblies

ISO 6605:2017

Testing equipment that uses hydraulic processes will not only provide an opportunity to protect against physical risks, but will also significantly help to establish the existing system of the equipment used. That is why we recommend that you follow the prescriptions of international standards such as ISO 6605: 2017.

ISO 6605:2017 specifies uniform test methods for evaluating the performance of hoses and hose assemblies (hoses and attached hose fittings) used in hydraulic fluid power systems. Specific tests and performance criteria for evaluating hoses and hose assemblies used in hydraulic applications are in accordance with the requirements of the respective product (hoses or hose fitting) specifications.

This international standard is quite detailed and specializes in regulating both global issues and detailed ones. That is why its presence can significantly structure the existing system of your organization.

Regulation specification of applied systems

Since any system and any equipment can be used in different types of human activities, and accordingly be adjusted in different ways depending on the chosen path, organizations and enterprises receive appropriate results. If you are interested in entering more global markets for your activities, or if you want to achieve the most productive results with minimal risks, we strongly recommend that you always be up to date with the latest international standards and have at least basic documents available to be sure that your activities will bring results as close as possible to expected.
