Electricity, transmission technologies and international regulation of the entire system

Updated: Jul 4, 2021

With the development of technologies, the number of materials and methods of their application is increasing, such industries as energy are developing, which are directly related to electricity and its use, optimization of processes and increasing the productivity of activities carried out. Despite the fact that the emphasis of modern innovations is on transmitting information and, if possible, other elements over long distances with minimal use of additional devices, in this case we are talking about wires and their use, in everyday life it is impossible to underestimate their role. That is why international standards regulating their production and operation are still among the most in demand. Today we will acquaint you with the latest updates in the field of international standardization, namely with documents that may be useful to you in building a clear scientific technological base and a safely functioning system.

EN IEC 60317–12:2020

In addition to generalized standards, there are also documents that have an extended and detailed description of the technical aspects introduced into production processes when using certain devices, in this case, wires. One of the most key standards of this type is IEC 60317–12: 2020.

This standard is available as IEC 60317–12:2020 RLV which contains the International Standard and its Redline version, showing all changes of the technical content compared to the previous edition.IEC 60317–12:2020 specifies the requirements of enamelled round copper winding wires of class 120 with a sole coating based on polyvinyl acetal or polyvinyl formal resin, which can be modified provided it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire requirements.

Despite this, each document contains a distinctive feature by which it is possible to distinguish both the scope of possible application of this document and the technical features. One of the striking examples in which such trends can be considered are the standards EN IEC 60317–17: 2020 and EN IEC 60317–18: 2020.

Specifications for p articular types of winding wires — Part 17: Polyvinyl acetal enamelled rectangular copper wire, class 105

EN IEC 60317–17:2020

IEC 60317–17:2020 is available as IEC 60317–17:2020 RLV which contains the International Standard and its Redline version, showing all changes of the technical content compared to the previous edition.

IEC 60317–17:2020 specifies the requirements of enamelled rectangular copper winding wires of class 105 with a sole coating based on polyvinyl acetal resin, which can be modified provided it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire requirements

The specified combinations of width and thickness as well as the specified ratio of width/thickness are given in IEC 60317–0–2. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2010. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: — modification of the Scope (Clause 1); — renaming of stretching test to adherence test and a modification of the requirement in 8.2.

Specifications for p articular types of winding wires — Part 18: Polyvinyl acetal enamelled rectangular copper wire, class 120

EN IEC 60317–18:2020

IEC 60317–18:2020 is available as IEC 60317–18:2020 RLV which contains the International Standard and its Redline version, showing all changes of the technical content compared to the previous edition.IEC 60317–18:2020 specifies the requirements of enamelled rectangular copper winding wires of class 120 with a sole coating based on polyvinyl acetal or polyvinyl formal resin, which can be modified provided it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire requirements

The specified combinations of width and thickness as well as the specified ratio width/thickness are given in IEC 60317–0–2. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2004 and Amendment 1:2009. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: — modification of the Scope (Clause 1); — revision to thermal class designation from 105 to 120 in 3.2.2; — renaming of stretching test to adherence test, and modification to the requirements in 8.2; — revision to the cut-through requirement in Clause 10.

Since the above documents are very similar and even have almost identical characteristics, we recommend that you ask all your questions in the process of familiarizing yourself with these documents to our team of specialists who will help you avoid mistakes when choosing the necessary document for the development of your organization.

Specifications for par ticular types of winding wires — Part 27–1: Paper tape covered round copper wire

EN IEC 60317–27–1:2020

Since the number of technologies is very extensive, therefore, the number of materials and types and wires used in them is absolutely the same. That is why a separate international regulatory document is created for each type of technology, one of which is IEC 60317–27–1: 2020.

This standard specifies the requirements of paper tape covered round copper winding wires. This covering consists of two or more layers of paper tape and is primarily intended for winding coils for oil immersed transformers.

The range of nominal conductor diameters covered by this document is: — 0,500 mm up to and including 5,000 mm. The nominal conductor diameters are specified in Clause 4 of IEC 60317–0–1:2013. The paper tapes included in this document are restricted to those specified in IEC 60554–1 and IEC 60554–3–5.

If your company or organization uses these wires in their activities, we recommend that you study this document in more detail and think about purchasing it to structure the existing system.

Specifications for par ticular types of winding wires — Part 27–2: Paper tape covered round aluminium wire

EN IEC 60317–27–2:2020

As in any other document, certain parts of international standards are complementary in order not to change the entire document due to changes in application technology. For the aforementioned standard, such an addition, or rather an explanatory part, is IEC 60317–27–2: 2020.

IEC 60317–27–2:2020 specifies the requirements of paper tape covered round aluminium winding wires. This covering consists of two or more layers of paper tape and is primarily intended for winding coils for oil immersed transformers. The range of nominal conductor diameters covered by this document is: — 0,500 mm up to and including 5,000 mm.

The nominal conductor diameters are specified in Clause 4 of IEC 60317–0–3:2008 and IEC 60317–0–3:2008/AMD1:2013. The paper tapes included in this document are restricted to those covered in IEC 60554–1 and IEC 60554–3–5.

If your organization is deeply involved in the operation, sale and application of technologies using this type of wires, we recommend that you have all parts of this international standard in stock.

International Documentation — Map for New Markets

Compliance with international requirements is not just a necessary moment for the settlement of documentary and legal aspects, but, first of all, confidence that the existing system functions in the safest way. In this case, you can be sure that the quality of your products will not tolerate the risks associated with the operation of the wrong equipment, or poor-quality system settings. Moreover, the availability of international standards will enable your company to scale and capture new markets. And our team is always happy to help you stay up to date with the latest developments in the field of international standards.
